With its plain, wood facade and understated sign, it's easy to walk right past Raglan as twilight falls on OB. The first thing you notice is how at ease you feel. The atmosphere, complete with reclaimed wood tables, loads of natural lighting due to retractable front windows, mellow reggae music and tons of open space, makes you feel comfortable and relaxed. Next to be noticed are the fun, playful touches throughout the restaurant, including chalk boards, games at each table, dartboards, shuffleboard tables and whimsical videos rotating on TV screens. Being off the main drag of Newport Street is cool, though, and the atmosphere on the patio is more peaceful than if the place were just a block away. As far as patios are concerned, Raglan's is a good one. Even on a chilly night, sitting up against the wall makes good use of the brand new heaters that throw plenty of warmth to keep away the clammy ocean breezes. KPBS Arts and Culture Feature: The owners, who are from New Zealand (Bare Back Grill franchise), asked Soriano to capture the feel of this quintessential SoCal neighborhood, but to also reference New Zealand's surf and rugby culture. Soriano, who's designed for his share of wealthy, luxe-seeking clients, says that with Ocean Beach, "it was more about anti-establishment, anti-design, anti-structure, anti-corporate." The prolific designer seems relaxed as we talk - he sips on a beer - but that laid back facade masks an exquisite attention to detail and an overall reluctance to talk to the press. Soriano doesn't like being the face of his design brand; he'd rather have the "properties," as he calls them, speak for themselves. For Raglan, Soriano immersed himself in Ocean Beach and became a regular at the weekly farmers market. He took note of all the visual hallmarks of the neighborhood: surf shop stickers, skateboards, graffiti and surfboards among them. "We looked at how we could have a nod to those design elements but reinvent them in our own way." Simple black bullhorn-shaped lamps hang over the tables. Look up, and you'll see the illuminated insides are covered in stickers. "The elements are there, they're just not so obvious. They're not in your face," says Soriano. "I like to play on things that have to do with memory, childhood sensibilities, a sense of play, things that everyone can relate to," says Soriano. "Design for me is about giving people the opportunity to reconnect to those good feelings, those good memories." Soriano says his inspiration doesn't come from other designs. It comes from "seeing people laugh, seeing people smile" in the spaces he designs. "At the end of the day, that’s my highest agenda." The Sports Arena will spend $900,000 on its new Club 3500 alone. “This is the most excited I've been in the 18 years that we've occupied the building,” Ernie Hahn, general manager of the facility, said yesterday. “With the improvements we're adding, we'll be more advanced than our competition in the marketplace.” Located on the lower level of the arena, the 6,500-square-foot club will be a larger and more upscale version of the smaller Arena Club that it replaces. Club 3500, which will also be available for private rentals and parties, is limiting membership to 170 per year. Thirty-five memberships have been sold by word-of-mouth since Thursday, said Hahn, who describes Club 3500 as a “very swank” cross between downtown's Stingaree nightclub and the field-level Sony Dugout Club at Petco Park. The improvements are “a positive” for San Diego, said Gary Bongiovanni, the publisher of Pollstar , the concert industry's leading weekly trade publication. Clear floor to ceiling soundproof glass walls separate them, yet the expansive wood "bar within a bar" spans the two rooms and serves as a visual connection; encouraging continuous circulation. The Control Room features a quieter lounge area and restaurant, evoking memories of your uncle’s den or a makeshift garage studio. Above the tufted booths, nearly 500 hand selected "vintage" vinyl LPs clad one wall while the opposing back bar mirror features nearly the same amount of Olde English beer cans mimicking a sound equalizer. The Recording Room showcases a glass enclosed DJ Station which doubles as a stage for karaoke. Techno inspired super graphics flank booths with drop-down projection screens offering classic, interactive arcade games which guests can play via Sony PlayStation. An open-kitchen with high bar seating and dance floor further amplify the energy. The overall tone of the property sets up a harmonious, yet continuously variable vibe. Although the venue incorporates old and new sensibilities, the design elements remain intrinsically linked by an overriding rhythm that remains cohesive and visually engaging. Excerpt from Editorial Review: When Sessions Public owner Abel Kaase first approached the hot hospitality designer Michael Soriano to consult on the look and feel of his new place, Soriano wasn’t sure about taking on another project. The award-winning designer of such eye-catching San Diego spaces as The Pearl Hotel, Vin de Syrah, and Analog Music and Burger Bar already had a lot on his plate. Kaase had a vision of a comfortable space with clean lines, furnished with reclaimed items that could be re-purposed while retaining their patina and personality. His deep involvement in the community and his resourcefulness in finding products and materials were being called into play as he gathered inspiration and resources. Soriano’s interest was piqued. Then Kaase showed him a sample barstool, little knowing it would seal the deal. Kaase stumbled across the vintage barstools, which date from the 1930s, in an antique store in Detroit, and had the dealer track down the rest of the set from a woman outside the city. The spare design and weathered materials of the barstools inspired Kaase’s vision for the look and feel of the whole restaurant. “I just thought, anyone who could come up with this barstool for his place has an idea I find interesting, and I want to be a part of it,” said Soriano. Another draw for Soriano was the involvement of Kaase’s business partner, Tomas Ryan, an architect whose Core Design Studio created the schematic vision for Sessions Public. Soriano also saw Sessions Public as an opportunity to work with Sarah Watlington, a young designer who had transformed Parallel 33 – a Soriano-designed space – into its new incarnation, as Wellington. Soriano was impressed with Watlington’s eye for structure and proportion and thought combining it with his sense of whimsy would work well for Kaase’s space. With a fast-track schedule of less than seven weeks, Soriano and Watlington threw themselves into the Sessions Public concept with gusto. “It’s about respecting the concept, respecting the food, and making it a place people like to be,” said Soriano. Sessions Public now boasts warm cream paint and high-gloss construction orange Copenhagen chairs; upholstery cladded walls; reclaimed wood tables, shelves, and light fixtures (with Edison bulbs; a textured concrete floor with echoes of the tiles beneath; reclaimed décor items such as windows, shutters, and a collage of pages from an antique encyclopedia; and a large blackboard on which guests can add their doodles and comments. Whimsical touches include taxidermied ducks and dozens of candles flickering in jam jars. Your bill might be brought on a piece of wood from a salvaged dresser drawer, with the handle still attached. The space is comfortable and welcoming, yet still holds some unexpected touches of delight. And it was all launched from a single vintage barstool.
